MP3s are doomed

I found some old vinyl at a record fair hosted by the Vinyl Preservation Society. A really great both was hosted by Unified Groove Merchants from Spokane, WA. I can subscribe to this theology:
The 10 Commandments of The Vinyl Preservation Society of Idaho was founded on the following principles and respectfully asks its members to adopt them and embrace them as their own.
  1. Honor the importance of music as an art form
  2. Listen actively and with intention
  3. Respect others and their musical choices
  4. Maintain an open mind and a curious ear
  5. Choose vinyl whenever there’s a musical choice to be made
  6. Preserve our vinyl heritage by caring for and about vinyl records
  7. Recognize your ownership of the Society by actively influencing its direction
    and development
  8. Evangelize the vinyl life and your role as an Ambassador for the Society at
    every opportunity
  9. Share your vinyl history, knowledge and passion
  10. Support your local independent record merchants

Beats of Doom

DJ KEMO spins some underground grunge to set the mood on The UNHerd(sic) 5-7PM MT.

It's a sign of the dark times. Half of the new music I've received in the last month is programmed for night gaunts. Music promoters are distributing dystopian soundtracks to accompany our descent into economic eschaton. There is some hope at the end of this set to complete the arc.

I'm on a Disco Witch-hunt

Modern English and a fan at Einstein A-Go-Go 1986

Growing up in the '80s in a medium sized town in the Bible-belt, a "godsend" was a radio show called "Disco Witch-hunt" aired by WJCT the pubilc station. The max-headroom-esque DJ played super-underground mutant pop that you could not find anywhere else. Today with music blogs galore, the kids have no concept of indie radio being an oasis when you live in a culturally isolated place. I think it indie radio still plays a roll today. Especially being able to broadcast info about what is going on locally in music venues, record stores, etc. I'm really interested in hearing about where people get the 411 on music shows in Boise. Boise Weekly? Go Listen Boise? Record Exchange? Twitter? What else?

Monsters of Ambient

Here is a handful of tracks from a couple of rockers who made some electronic music in side projects. Also something new from the Engineers and their sources. Finally a few field recordings and treatments.

I was febrile for a couple of days and all I wanted to hear was ambient stuff. Nothing like a little super-ambo chillout to couple with the home treatment. Lots of tea. Watching the rain. Annual plant death. Yeah.

Planet of the Lemurs

All this talk of a "missing link" is just plain stupid. Do the mediators really have to dumb the science down to generate hype? It undermines the credibility of science and riles up the Creationists. I guess that's the way you do it, make up some emotionally charged BS and sell it to the masses in our newfound idiocracy. Cheney seems to be using that formula. I can understand manipulation in politics, but it really bugs me when we mediatize science and sacrifice accuracy. I'm not advocating for highfalutin geek jargon. I'm saying that it is possible to communicate the complexity of nature in the plain language of mass media. From now on I'm calling it the Histrionic Channel.

So here's a soundtrack for you to ponder the parallel universe where lemurs rule the Earth and the mediasphere.

C4 Plants Eat More Carbon

I wonder if drought tolerant plants absorb more carbon if they are C4 plants and not carbon leaky C3 plants? That would be double the eco-karma if you planted C4, drought tolerant plants. Less water use, more carbon fixing. What species?

Spring in Boise is a oxygen rich, moisture laden, and fleeting affair. I wish the foothills would stay green until August. Get out there immediately before it dries up into a crusty mass of dead grass. Pretend it is millions of years ago and the climate is tropical and there are dense forests of avocado trees. I've heard there are avocado leaf fossils in the foothills. Anyone know where?
Make a rock sculpture for post-eschaton inhabitants to help them remember how to dance.

Here's a floaty cloud soundtrack to accompany you on your hike.

Commercial Potential

Here is a selection of releases from 2008 that are either really good or have so much commercial potential that they have been licensed for use in advertisements by the likes of Apple and Anheuser Busch. Here's a good treatment of the business model. What is a music fan to make of themselves if their favorite music is used to target marketing campaigns back at them? I think it means we share good taste with the brand managers and good indie artists have to do whatever it takes to survive. Gang Gang Dance points out the practicality "We’re a band, we make music, and that’s what we want to be known for."

Richard D. James - Richard's Hairpiece [beck-odelay-(deluxe_edition]
Restiform Bodies - Panic Shopper (Tobacco Remix) [TV Loves You Back]
