Lingua Libre

Special guests in the studio Chris, Jason and I discuss German musicians. Coincidentally Jason requests that we play some Can after Holger Czukay's cinematic exposition. The duo are currently reconstituting songs penned as "Rhyme or Republic". Chris, fresh off his middle eastern tour, presents us with some tracks recorded in situ. Lovers of that infectious Boise jangly, grunge pop sound with warbling, birdlike guitars should definitely check Rhyme or Republic out. Thanks for visiting Chris and Jason!

White Boi Disco and Jamaican Jazz

I was crushed - my favorite song coopted by a brand manager for a certain light beer with lime. Watching the Olympics, I kept hearing Santogold. In the commercials, in the segments about the Jamaican sprinters, etc. The network and the beverage maker, targeting me. You cannot escape Disneyfication of your own private culture. We all live in a Kingdom. How did I hear about Santogold to begin with? Is the music blogosphere more precious than old media? Somehow cooler?

I don't care what they say about you...

"I don't care what they say about you, you are alright!" e

I have a friend who is a DJ and music producer. He got a job at a fancy film production studio as the audio designer. My favorite thing about him was all his inside jokes. He was a really easy going guy with a lot of impish characteristics. Like he would go around the studio where he worked and would tell people in private, "you know, i don't care what anyone says about you, you are alright." This usually resulted in everyone laughing about ridiculous personal identity perceptions. But one time this dude picked the wrong guy to joke with. He said his usual phrase to a top guy of the company and the executive guy didn't get it that it was a joke. He prodded "What are people saying about me?!" And it became a big deal that my friend couldn't bring back into reality. I guess you could say some people are afraid of being caught with their pantalones in a compromised position.

Pan American Rebel Scum

Welcome to the show that sounds like LCD Soundsystem as the sound track of Star Wars.

Brazil is America's big sibling in South America. Americans have a healthy rebel streak. But perhaps we only have juke box rebellion. Packaged by evil branding executives. Thanks to bill for pointing me out to these magnetic star spangled ribbons that say "Just Pretend it's all OK."

Canada has these political movements that crop up arround personalitlies. Parties rise out of the mist. I tried to read some Canadian press covering their recent budget legislation and I felt like I was watching cricket. I didn't know the rules and everything was happening in a parallel universe with the same language but different culture. Alberta is like Texas of the north. Yehaa!

Idaho is a white man's word made to sound "exotic" and native American. Abraham Lincoln was present at the meeting where the name was born. It means potatoes and red-state now. But there is something else here too. You have to be here or listen in to experience that.

We need your help supporting the build-out of our FM hardware! Within the next week we need you to write a letter to the FCC to express your enthusiasm for our endeavor in a profound way.

On Feb 22, we will be applying for a BIG federal grant - one which could potentially cover 75% of our costs for purchasing equipment such as a transmitter, antenna and production grade studio gear. Overall such costs could run between $300,000 and $400,000, so the impact of this grant request is obviously monumental.

Please consider contributing to this fundamental component of our grant proposal. Letters should "document community support for and interest in the services the new facility would provide" - in other words, how would Boise Community Radio change your life and OUR community!

A few other specifics about how where/when to submit you letter:

- Compose on a letterhead, if you have one
- Addressed (but not mailed) to [NTIA/PTFP Room H-4812, U.S. Department of Commerce, 1401 Constitution Avenue NW, Washington DC 20230]
- Salutation should read "Members of Peer Review Panel"
- MAIL to Boise Community Radio, 1020 W. Main St #200, Boise ID 83702
- We'd like to receive all letters by Friday Feb 15.
- Email versions (pdf, word) are fine (to: jabrams at radioboise.org)

We'd LOVE to receive a letter from you - it's vitally important. You are encouraged to ask friends and colleagues to provide their support letters, as well. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,
DaveF
