Commercial Potential

Here is a selection of releases from 2008 that are either really good or have so much commercial potential that they have been licensed for use in advertisements by the likes of Apple and Anheuser Busch. Here's a good treatment of the business model. What is a music fan to make of themselves if their favorite music is used to target marketing campaigns back at them? I think it means we share good taste with the brand managers and good indie artists have to do whatever it takes to survive. Gang Gang Dance points out the practicality "We’re a band, we make music, and that’s what we want to be known for."

Richard D. James - Richard's Hairpiece [beck-odelay-(deluxe_edition]
Restiform Bodies - Panic Shopper (Tobacco Remix) [TV Loves You Back]

Lingua Libre

Special guests in the studio Chris, Jason and I discuss German musicians. Coincidentally Jason requests that we play some Can after Holger Czukay's cinematic exposition. The duo are currently reconstituting songs penned as "Rhyme or Republic". Chris, fresh off his middle eastern tour, presents us with some tracks recorded in situ. Lovers of that infectious Boise jangly, grunge pop sound with warbling, birdlike guitars should definitely check Rhyme or Republic out. Thanks for visiting Chris and Jason!

White Boi Disco and Jamaican Jazz

I was crushed - my favorite song coopted by a brand manager for a certain light beer with lime. Watching the Olympics, I kept hearing Santogold. In the commercials, in the segments about the Jamaican sprinters, etc. The network and the beverage maker, targeting me. You cannot escape Disneyfication of your own private culture. We all live in a Kingdom. How did I hear about Santogold to begin with? Is the music blogosphere more precious than old media? Somehow cooler?

I don't care what they say about you...

"I don't care what they say about you, you are alright!" e

I have a friend who is a DJ and music producer. He got a job at a fancy film production studio as the audio designer. My favorite thing about him was all his inside jokes. He was a really easy going guy with a lot of impish characteristics. Like he would go around the studio where he worked and would tell people in private, "you know, i don't care what anyone says about you, you are alright." This usually resulted in everyone laughing about ridiculous personal identity perceptions. But one time this dude picked the wrong guy to joke with. He said his usual phrase to a top guy of the company and the executive guy didn't get it that it was a joke. He prodded "What are people saying about me?!" And it became a big deal that my friend couldn't bring back into reality. I guess you could say some people are afraid of being caught with their pantalones in a compromised position.
