Playlists for Radio Boise, Community Radio show "FiloVision" which is on RadioBoise.org on Fri 6-8PM and Mountain Time. Host DJ Foster plays new and retro electronic, jazz funk greats.
This FiloVision mix is for those of you who have a hole in your soul because you don't appreciate metronome maestros. There is still a chance for you to find sequenced salvation. I saw one of John Wood's "Drum Machines Have No Soul" bumper stickers displayed in full sincerity on a Volvo driving through the North End. Probably the driver is a luthier. No offense to my hick music friends. Or maybe the Volvo driver really was John!
I'm glad my soundcard was acting up and glitched the mixing to death. See, that's authentic. Do not fear precision or irregularity. Bring on the soul drilling, crusty beatz.

So was your cell phone or GPS coverage hampered by the solar wind storm that hit last week? Did you see the Northern Lights? Me neither. I went out looking for evidence and saw a few meteors. Tonight there should be a few stragglers. Last night was supposed to be the main swarm of Perseid meteors. I did notice how glorious the sun was today after that little cold front. Let's all go out and bask tomorrow in the 100 degree heat for one last hurrah before the "touch of fall" descends on us.
Here's some Sun songs for ya'!

American techno creativity arises from the ashes of fried ironworx. Evidence: Detroit. See also -> Chattanooga, TN. The place is going through a rebirth. Everywhere steel and water and light in unexpected forms. The mountains of Tennessee are green and slight compared to the dry and grand Rockies in my backyard. The coolness of this limestone wet place was a comfort from the searing Martian wind of the Great Basin. It is easy to see why this whole Appalachian paradise, Nashville included, is a Mecca of music. Mountains are inspiration. Industrial meltdown is a creative Phoenix.
Here's some North American Techno and Spanish Electronix.

Tonight's show has a few tracks inspired by the Cambodian Living Arts project, a performance art non-profit in Phnom Penh that is bridging the generations and rebooting the cultural brand of Cambodia. The amazing thing is that CLA is giving a voice to the generation almost ruined by the atrocities of the past and helping the youth of Cambodia and the Cambodian diaspora connect with their almost lost culture.
Radio Boise is going to be at the Boise Rec Fest this weekend. Come check out all the things you can do outside in this wide open western playground. Should be lots of skating!

After a trip to the Record Exchange, I selected some releases that I predict will be on "best of" lists at the end of 2010. The RadioBoise podcasters are in the studio for this one. I confused Andy Jenkinson with Tom Jenkinson (Squarepusher).

Organizer of the Boise Creative and Improvised Music Festival, Kris Hartung, came in tonight and shared some archive recordings from previous festivals.
The 5th Annual Boise Creative and Improvised Music Festival April 23 - 24, 2010
Now in its fifth year, the Boise Creative and Improvised Music Festival will feature an impressive array of performers from Boise and throughout North America. Fans and enthusiasts will come from all over to hear some of the finest cutting-edge creative music rarely heard live in Boise and the surrounding Treasure Valley. This exciting event will also feature local visual artists and live art on stage. Best of all, the festival is free to the public!
DJ Jesse comes on board FiloVision and takes us on a tour of his version of the history of electronic music. Jesse has been a huge figure in the electronic music culture of the Northwest. The Boise Techno Vegan Posse of '94 would not have thrived without Jessesense's ZenMastery.
The old Moby track makes me nostalgic for warehouse parties in the Northeast in '92.

Punk electro fans might want to check out the Jaguar Love show at the Neurolux on March 10. The Maladroids open with their ironing board keyboard stand.
All music starts out as noise. What's next? Angry brothers fighting over material comforts? For now, we have the sounds of Gentle Rowser who performs at Piazza Di Vino.

This show is an experiment with interviewing. Thanks to DJ Cosmo for the inspiration.
What do females look for when making mate selection choices? Signals like tattoos, apparently. SMS messages, not so much. And then what after 3 weeks?

Jonathon Hexner - Large Buck (Gun Powder on Rag Paper, 46" x 69" F)
We are all about the animism in our urban-wildland interface here on FiloVision. This episode explores the dimensional exchanges between the living and the dead. The hunted and the hunters. Are males especially vulnerable when they go out into the night in search of survival? After recording this, I saw several gun powder prints of bucks at the Gail Severn Gallery in Ketchum, ID. That night I co-opted my daughter's U-Create Music toy sampler and made a little track. I think it is a sign that I need to create more music. More to come.
Sun Valley Center for the Arts has an exhibit of Indian (South Asian) art on exhibit. Check out the water colors of Baseera Khan. The gallery people said that Salman Rushdie is going to eventually make it to Idaho - in between filming Midnight's Children, lecturing at Emory and other activities. Maybe he can speak to us through telepathic dreamtime communication.

Got my eyes checked today and had all sorts of scans, puffs of air, scopes, and optical tests. I have an astigmatism at an angle in my left eye so regular soft contact lenses weren't working for me. I am trying a special contact lens for eccentric astigmatism that has a little weight in the edge so the lens sits at a prescribed angle on my eye. I can see great, but it feels like something is not right. I might just have to go under the laser.
Boise Art Museum has a new exhibit on the subject of robots opening this weekend. There is also a build night with a microcontroller orientation at the Reuseum Saturday @ 6PM.
Jason stops by for a tabula rasa nightlife report. He reveals a model for evening entertainment detection that involves no predetermined destination. It requires boots-on-the-ground field work in our urban walking grid. The boots looked like the slip on kind with a little bit of elastic. No zipper, Star Trek deals.
Kevin guides us through a satellite image inspired journey within. Don't let the pixel sirens fool ya.

The Basement Vintage Boutique is in the Idaho building, not the Alaska building. All these buildings named after after Western territories/States is a little confusing. I used to work in the Smith Tower in Seattle which was down the street from another Alaska building that had walruses with tusks on the facade.

I watched two really good documentaries lately. One about Stax Records. The other, Copyright Criminals, about sampling. It's amazing how much influence the Soulsville sound had on beats based music. The sampling of it I think contributes to honoring those musicians, especially in light of the fluidity of media in the social Internet.

I invited John Macaroy to guest DJ for FiloVision. He sent me a CD that he produced in his home studio. I couldn't convince him to come into the studio and do it live. I think he is scarred by the trauma he experienced in his commercial broadcast days back East when he worked for ABC. Apparently there were some indecency charges or complaints filed with the FCC, I'm not sure, I couldn't get much out of his agent except a few cryptic text messages. Hope you enjoy his selections and prompts to go to the Record Exchange to check out recordings by these artists. Here's the playlist of bands that guest DJ John Macaroy played tonight on FiloVision...
Beruit Pheonix Vampire Weekend Nurses The Generationals White Rabbits (amazing album btw) Grizzly bear Animal Collective Of Montreal Bat for Lashes Karen O and the kids (where wild things are soundtrack)
And then a coda of extras while I patched up the automation system after a hard drive crash. Send money so we can buy decent hardware. :-)

I had some guests in the studio including Gabe from A Modern Balloonist. They performed with Finn Riggins at the Linen Bldg. recently. Stay tuned for upcoming show info.
Some selections from my favorites that came out in 2009. For some reason I couldn't get the Jim O'Rourke to play. A couple of anthems here. Must be because everyone wants to wave their flag. Either that or it is an RPM branding requirement.
